Defining PostcolonialismI'm working on a definition of postcolonialism that is both accessible and perspicacious for a fund raising enterprise to benefit Amahoro Africa. Here's some of my thinking at the moment. I welcome feedback and nuance.Colonialism: a system of racialized and/or gendered constructs that maintain various forms of control over another national or ethnic entity. Neo-colonialism: a tragic trend resulting from the impact of global capitalism whereby new forms of control and domination supplant displaced political hegemonies, preponderantly by means of economic leverage. Postcolonialism: an intentional, self-critical, other-sensitive modus operandi of pressing those in power beyond the unconscious or deliberate tendencies toward economic, political, cultural and religious hegemony. posted by Jake at 12/05/2006 01:53:00 PM 2 Comments: |

A daunting task indeed..but quite well done..If I had to do define postcolonialism in one word (and im glad i dont), it would be "problematizing." Problematizing mythical constructs through varying methodologies seeking to expose hegemonies of power.
And of course this all starts (for many of us) with the construct of "religion:"
“Religion is solely the creation of the scholar's study. It is created for the scholar's analytic purposes by his imaginative acts of comparison and generalization. Religion has no existence apart from the academy.”
anyway..
interesting thoughts on all this from Sanneh:
“the West should get over its Christendom guilt complex about Christianity as colonialism by accepting that Christianity has survived it European political habits and is thriving today in its post-Western phase among non-Western populations, sometimes because of, and often in spite of, Western missionaries."
well done Jake..thanks for the hard thought that went into these...

those are some big words there. from jake and mark! you guys frequently send me to m-w.com to make sure you're saying what i think you're saying. ;)
i think what you're saying is good, and i wonder if some additional thought as to word choice might make the whole of your definitions more accessible to many listeners/readers (i'm referring to myself here). i'm no dummy, and i suppose it depends on the audience, but you might want to consider some of the word choices.
