Naming GraceNaming Grace is a great display of homiletics as practical theology. At every bend in the road, Hilkert is engaging with theologians and philosophers (primarily Ricoeur and, to a lesser degree, Gadamer) to buttress her homiletical proposition that preaching ought to be about recognizing and naming grace in our world that is marred by the realities of corporate and individual sin. Despite the critiques of her work that I offer in my review below, this is a fine, highly readable, and engaging work, one that I found both illuminating and challenging. Here is the full text of a review that I wrote recently of Mary Catherine Hilkert's book, Naming Grace.
