Not a good signI just started a new book by Gerald Bruns called, Hermeneutics Ancient and Modern. My buddy Eric is taking a directed reading with Carol Newsom at Emory on hermeneutics and I am going to try and keep up. I limped my way through the first chapter and this is how Bruns concludes:"The book that follows is an attempt to stretch the conceptual history of hermeneutics in order to produce a less narrow, more heterogeneous and complicated picture of its ancient and modern boundaries, but it will be apparent at once that this attempt is far from being either systematic or rigorously and exhaustively empirical--how could it be, given the vastness and intractability of its subject"(16). In other words, this book is an attempt to complicate and obfuscate an already occluded 'loose and baggy monster' called hermeneutics. What ever happened to writing books with lucidity and cogency as the chief ends of publishing? posted by Jake at 1/18/2005 02:14:00 PM
